Meet Shelley!

Some of our colleagues have transitioned over to Sectra from the customer side. Here, we’re going to meet Shelley, one of our Project Applications Specialists, who has done exactly that.

She used to work for our customer Willis-Knighton in Louisiana and has extensive experience in Radiology and with the Sectra PACS. Shelley's journey has been one of reinvention and following her heart. After obtaining a degree in speech communication, she worked in various industries before rediscovering her love for medicine and radiology. Being the smart cookie that she is, Shelley joined Willis-Knighton as a secretary to explore if radiology was the right path for her.

She continued working as a secretary while studying and eventually became an X-ray tech and PACS Admin. Over the years, she worked in various roles within radiology, gaining expertise in multiple areas. “I've touched every arena in radiology. I've been a secretary, transporter, tech, PACS admin, assistant director, and director. I mean the only thing I didn't do was fix the machines.”

Being involved as a customer during the transition from Philips, when going enterprise-wide with the Sectra PACS, and witnessing the evolution of the PACS from IDS5 to IDS7 has been immensely valuable for her work as a Project Applications Specialist at Sectra.

After a hiatus for medical reasons, Shelley pondered her career path again and realized her passion for working with Sectra and the PACS product. Impressed by their dedication and love for the company, she reached out to colleagues still working at Sectra. She has now been with Sectra for two years and couldn't be happier.

Initially, Shelley worked as an Applications Specialist in the training team. However, she discovered her true calling in projects, where she helps customers design workflows and set them up for success in their daily work. She enjoys building relationships with customers from the project's start and witnessing their success at the go-live stage. Shelley's previous experience designing workflows from the customer side gives her a unique perspective.

Shelley believes that the biggest challenges moving forward lie in the necessary mindset shifts. She had to adapt to new processes when joining Sectra and now assists her customers in making similar transitions. Conversations with her customers range from adopting new display protocols to transitioning to the cloud.

Since joining Sectra, Shelley has been working remotely which really brings a flexibility that she loves. In two years, she has lived in three different states, and when their son moved off to Alabama for school, she and her husband for 27 years followed. Although they’re almost empty nesters now, with more and more free time on their hands, they really keep themselves busy. For example, Shelley loves kayaking and dancing, and she and her husband also own an Airbnb business in Texas.

One of Shelley's most memorable experiences at Sectra was attending rookie training at the company's headquarters in Sweden. She especially enjoyed meeting people she had only heard of or met online before.

“That trip was also special to me personally because I had the opportunity to go to Copenhagen a few days early. We had a Danish exchange student living with us for a year, a couple of years ago. Now I got to meet her parents and see where she grew up and her life today.” Shelley also adds that she loved Sweden, despite being there in October.

“The entire experience was amazing for me, with the rich history of the cities, the food being so clean and I love that everyone walks everywhere. The feel of the people and the atmosphere there is just so calm. If it wasn't for the cold weather, I would move there in a heartbeat.”

You’re welcome anytime Shelley! Thank you for sharing your story!

PS. You can also see Shelley as part of the holiday card from Sectra. Watch it here and enjoy!

Location: Originally from Louisiana. Working from home in Huntsville, Alabama, US

User tip: Keep your skills up. One thing I like to stress with the customers is that you've got to stay in it. If you don't use it, you lose it. Even if you transition to another role, you've got to revisit and keep your skills fresh.

Interesting fact: I went on an expedition to Peru when I was in X-ray school to excavate, radiograph,
and study mummies. After graduation, I traveled across the country and spoke on Paleo imaging* and forensic radiography.

*Paleo radiology: Imaging mummies and fossils
